Salted Caramel Protein: Flavour Strength and Servings

Salted caramel is the most assertive flavour in the range. That is either the reason to buy it or the reason not to, so it is worth being specific about what it is like.

How Strong the Flavour Is

Biotic’s Gain Salted Caramel Whey Protein Isolate is sweet with a salt note behind it, and the salt is what stops it reading as plain caramel. It does not fade into a drink the way vanilla does. A full serving in 250ml of water is intense; most people settle around 350 to 400ml.

When People Drink It

Because the flavour is strong enough to stand on its own, it tends to get used as a drink rather than as an ingredient. It goes into coffee reasonably well and into porridge badly, and it will overpower fruit in a blender. If you want something to build recipes on, vanilla is the flavour for that job.

What Is in a Serving

A serving contains 25g of protein, the same as every other flavour in the range. Against a daily protein figure of 120g, that is a fifth of the day; against 80g it is closer to a third. Made with water rather than milk, the serving carries the powder’s own calories and nothing more. The flavour changes none of those numbers.

The Wording We Are Allowed to Use

The claims authorised for protein in Great Britain are that protein “contributes to a growth in muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of normal bones” and that protein “is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children”. All four are quoted here because the authorised wording is the only wording permitted. They belong to protein as a nutrient in any food that is a source of protein; nothing is authorised for whey on its own.
