Chocolate Protein: Taste, Mixing and Serving Size

Chocolate is the flavour most people reach for first, and it behaves a little differently in a shaker from the fruit flavours. This is what to expect from it and what a serving contains.

What It Tastes Like

Cocoa is a strong flavour, so Biotic’s Gain Chocolate Whey Protein Isolate comes across as sweet up front with a faint bitter finish rather than tasting flat. In water it reads like a thin cocoa drink. In milk it is much closer to chocolate milk and noticeably heavier in the glass.

Mixing and Cooking With It

Because cocoa is already a dry powder, this flavour folds into oats, porridge and yoghurt without changing the texture much, which is the main reason people use it in food rather than only in drinks. In a shaker, cold liquid first and powder second gives the cleanest mix. It does not need a blender.

What 25g of Protein Comes To

A serving contains 25g of protein. If you are eating 100g of protein across a day, one shake accounts for a quarter of it; at 150g a day it is a sixth. Stirred into 40g of oats you are adding the oats’ own calories and protein on top. Where a serving sits in your day is arithmetic, not something the powder does on its own.

The Wording We Are Allowed to Use

Great Britain’s register of authorised health claims permits four claims for protein: that protein “contributes to a growth in muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of normal bones” and that protein “is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children”. Those apply to any food that is a source of protein, and whey isolate qualifies. There is no separate authorised claim for whey, so we do not make one.
