Banana Protein: How It Mixes and What’s in a Serving

Banana is the most recognisable flavour in the range, and how you mix it changes the result more than anything else about it. Here is what it is like to drink and what a serving actually contains.

How It Mixes

Biotic’s Gain Banana Whey Protein Isolate disperses in a shaker with cold water in about twenty seconds, with no blender needed. Liquid first and powder second leaves the fewest lumps. Isolate is a low-lactose powder, so it stays thin in water rather than thickening the way a blend can.

What It Tastes Like

In water the banana reads light and slightly sweet. In milk it is thicker and closer to a banana milkshake, and it takes a frozen banana or a spoon of oats in a blender without the flavour clashing, which is not true of every flavour in the range.

What Is in a Serving

One serving contains 25g of protein. Set against a daily protein figure of 120g, that is a fifth of the day in one drink; against 90g it is closer to a quarter. Mixing with 300ml of semi-skimmed milk instead of water adds roughly 150 calories and around 10g more protein to the glass. That is arithmetic about what is in the cup, and nothing more.

The Wording We Are Allowed to Use

On the Great Britain register of authorised health claims, the claims permitted for protein are that protein “contributes to a growth in muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass”, that protein “contributes to the maintenance of normal bones” and that protein “is needed for normal growth and development of bone in children”. Those are claims for protein as a nutrient in any food that is a source of protein, which whey isolate is. There is no authorised claim for whey itself, and we do not make one.
